A Sustainable Irrigation System or So-called Subak

Subak Bali is a traditional irrigation system that has been used for over a thousand years in Bali. It is essentially a water management system for rice paddy fields on Bali island, Indonesia, developed in the 9th century. It consists of five terraced rice fields and water temples covering nearly 20,000 hectares (49,000 acres). The temples are the main focus of this cooperative water management. In Bali, people design Subak to oversee water resources sustainably, ensuring that rice paddies get the ideal amount of water for growth while conserving water and preventing flooding.

Ubud Terrace (Terasering Ubud) also uses the Subak Bali system to maintain soil fertility and prevent erosion. With a collaborative and mutual cooperation (Gotong-Royong) philosophy, the farmers work together to manage water resources. Each Subak group is led by a village head or a priest who is in charge of distributing water fairly and ensuring that everyone in the group receives a sufficient quantity of water for their rice paddies.

In 2012, UNESCO inscribed Subak Bali as a World Heritage Site for its unique cultural significance and environmental sustainability.  It is a remarkable example of sustainable agriculture, allowing farmers to cultivate rice and other crops without degrading the environment.
