Celebration of Tumpek Kandang is evidence that the Balinese people are aware of animal welfare. This means they are aware of owing “merits” to the animals since it has a role in the preservation and prosperity of the ecosystem. Without the role of animals in our ecosystem, the life cycle won’t work.
Tumpek Kandang comes from two words. “Tumpek” meaning peak, and “Kandang” which is a Balinese word for a cage. The celebration falls on the Saturday of Uye, in the 22nd week of the pawukon cycle, every 210 days. Tumpek Kandang is one of the special days aimed to honour all animals whether it’s pets, livestock and household animals. Besides honouring the animals, the people of Bali also pray to God for a successful year of farming, bountiful harvest, and excellent quality produce.
The essence of the Tumpek Kandang ceremony embodies gratitude and appreciation towards animals for their assistance in human life. Additionally, Tumpek Kandang isn’t solely dedicated to animals but also encompasses the cleansing of Bhuana Agung and Bhuana Alit (in the context of humans and nature).
On the day Balinese people celebrate Tumpek Kandang, they made various offerings to thank the Sang Hyang Rare Angon as God’s manifestation of who created the animals. Some animals are treated differently during the celebration of Tumpek Kandang, such as cows and pigs.
Cows in Bali will receive special treatment than other animals because they assist farmers when ploughing rice fields. The farmes will wash and dress-up the cows in clothes fit for humans. Then, the farmers will place special cone spiral shapes from coconut leaves on the cow’s horns. Usually, when celebrating other rituals, the Balinese people will slaughter some pigs as an offering. In cases of an emergency, the people will sell the pigs to raise money. But, both those things will not happen on Tumpek Kandang day. The pigs will have white cloth wrapped around their bellies. The animals will then eat special food, sprinkled with rice, and holy water. To complete the celebration, the Balinese will also offer prayers to the animals.
Tumpek Kandang at Sacred Monkey Forest Ubud is also celebrated and conducted for the safety and health of the monkey and other animals. They have an important role in society, especially the social and economic life of the Padangtegal village. After the celebration is over, the monkeys will have special food such as eggs, grapes, carrots, and other fruit that they wouldn’t normally eat on a normal day.
Bali, with all the culture inside it, believes life should all be about showing love and understanding. The Balinese also believe that everyone is connected. People may have differences, but everyone has their own function and needs to be treated equally. We exist to complete one and another.

In a more modern context, the celebration of Tumpek Kandang is related to the preservation of wildlife. The zoos in Bali also celebrate Tumpek Kandang where the staff hold large ceremonies to honour the animals in captivity.
The essence of Tumpek Kandang is to remind people to maintain harmony between us with nature and be grateful for the blessing that nature has provided. Another Tumpek day celebrated in Bali is Tumpek Pangatag. This is a celebration for plants and trees. Although Tumpek Kandang and Tumpek Pangatag are somewhat different, they have the same essence. It’s all about maintaining harmony.
Almost everything in Bali has its own special day. Starting from animals, plants, machinery, to sea creatures; the list goes on. That’s why so many people from all over the world love Bali.
